Orange Palms

In my personalized tik tok echochamber I’m exposed to a lot of the crossover between what we know and what we don’t know, this translates to physics meets metaphysics, science meets religion. As an engineer I always prided myself in my ability to distinguish between the two.

There used to be this trick we played on each other as children. Someone would ask us to sniff their palm after they said it smelled like oranges. I could always smell the oranges right before I got smacked in the nose.

I could smell the oranges.

I believe in the child’s mind, that’s the most powerful thing we can worship because of how malleable and open it is. They believe in whatever they want, unafraid, without logic or feeling pressured to prove some overlap with unknown theoretical physics. They just know what they feel, no need to make any distinctions.

So as an adult, when play pretend started crossing over into spirituality, I hid it away. I didn’t want to tell anyone how I imagined when I can’t sleep it’s because the person I’m thinking about is also restless thinking of me. Or how when it rains our souls are getting cleaned off… Or … the way my mind caught fire Summer of 2016. Is this self sabotage? Or is there something better to come?

These are some of my play pretends, I don’t wish to preach, or be challenged, or label myself and all people as “a little insane”. I go back to this quote by John Steinbeck –
“And this I believe: that the free, exploring mind of the individual human is the most valuable thing in the world. And this I would fight for: the freedom of the mind to take any direction it wishes, undirected. And this I must fight against: any idea, religion, or government which limits or destroys the individual.” – John Steinbeck
